1% Healthier Every Day: Biohacks for Busy Women

Biohacking is taking the world by storm right now and as a Wellness Entrepreneur, I too have found myself gleaning from the information available and making small lifestyle adjustments that will benefit my overall wellness.

For any of you who have followed me for a season, you will know I am passionate about making health as attainable as possible with truth, tools and training designed to empower individuals to take health into their own hands and live a little better, every single day. 

I am grateful for the difference I have seen my platform make and know from the countless testimonies of lives being changed that small changes lead to big breakthroughs. My goal is to make lifestyles of health and happiness the norm - not the exception - with basic, bite-sized pieces of information that build on each other and bring forth transformation. This blog is a reflection of that desire and my hope is that any woman, anywhere, can read these short series and leave with valuable information they can implement right away. So let’s dive in!

For any of my readers who do not know what Biohacking is, let me quickly introduce it to you! Biohacking is an all-encompassing term that covers all sorts of tips and tricks one can implement in their own life to improve their body’s function, enhance health, increase vitality and hopefully, encourage longevity. Biohacking can range from simple practices, such as adding butter to your coffee, to more extreme procedures such as sitting in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. For those who are very committed to Biohacking practices, there is a large investment both of time and finances to dive into the latest biology, neuroscience and genetics research and pursue the latest trends that have shown to make a difference.

For many of us though, our Biohacking practices will be more on the simple side rather than the extreme - but that doesn’t mean they’re not impactful! Something I have done in my own life for 3 years has been the daily routine of drinking a morning Elixir - utilizing a personal recipe I got from a friend, then tweaked myself.

As different research and practices have come to light, I continue to make small adjustments to my routine to set my body up for optimal health, success and functioning. One of the biggest adjustments was to change up my routine and drink my daily Elixir in the afternoon rather than the morning! Let me explain why.

I was at a work event in Turks and Caicos and had been reading through the book, “Fast Like a Girl” by Dr Mindy Pelz. My husband and I were at the beach during one of my breaks and I interrupted Jason approximately 30 times within that hour with all the “aha!” moments I was gleaning from her content. It was then that my eyes were opened to the reality that as a woman, fasting is SO MUCH DIFFERENT for women than it is for men! With this newfound awareness, I wanted to implement what I was learning and start switching things up! This is when I decided to change my morning routine and ensure what I was doing was geared towards a woman’s body rather than a man’s!

My first big change was focused around the first thing I put into my body. Rather than starting my morning at 9 am with my elixir, which ultimately would break my fast, I decided to swap it out as an afternoon “snack” after my bowl of veggies, which includes half an avocado and a hard-boiled egg. In exchange for my morning elixir, I started drinking two tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) with a squeeze of lemon and a big glass of water. 

I made this switch because ACV is beneficial to extend a fast and it also provides benefits for normalizing blood sugar levels. This Biohack in particular was one that I learned from the lovely Aggie Lal, who has recently released a new book called, “Biohack Like a Woman” - a book I believe should be a part of every woman’s personal library! 

Since implementing Dr Mindy’s fasting hints, changing my routine to ACV in the morning and the elixir in the afternoon, I’ve noticed a huge change in my body! Any sugar cravings I had are completely gone. Both my hair and skin feel SO different. Plus I have way more energy than I used to! On top of all these other benefits, I noticed a major reframing in my mindset. I had believed this fasting experiment would be “hard” when it has been the complete opposite! I thought I would feel deprived every day, but I don’t!

As many of you have heard me say, “Health is a JOURNEY, not a destination.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson), which ultimately means that it is not about reaching a specific goal but rather, making intentional choices along the way that you continually build on and maintain. For my family and I, we make decisions every day with our health in mind, which is why we are able to enjoy happy, thriving bodies and all the many perks that come with it. 

As I have shared before, my goal is to make a lifestyle of health as simple and attainable as possible. Because so many look to me for answers when it comes to health and fitness, I want to make sure that I am always authentic and honest regarding how my health journey is constantly developing and growing. It is my joy to share little lifestyle changes, such as switching up my morning routine, or implementing ACV daily, and I hope you are able to learn from my own experiences and enter into the quality of life also available to you!

In this season of my life, these are four of the most valuable Biohacks in my current routine:

  1. Sitting on my Cooch Ball for 3 minutes each morning, breathing diaphragmatically and visualizing all of the parts of my life that I am grateful for. ~ This is really a 3-for-1 Biohack I’ve stacked to make the most of 3 quick minutes!
  2. Adding pink himalayan sea salt to my water bottle throughout the day. ~ This helps my cells absorb the water I drink more effectively. Hydrated cells function much more optimally than dehydrated ones, therefore cell care leads to self care.
  3. Going for a 10-minute walk after supper. ~ This, similar to ACV, helps with managing our natural blood sugar spikes after we eat.
  4. Daily Afternoon Elixir ~ This amazing hormone-supporting beverage is like a hug in a mug! It provides nutrition, flavor and benefits all in one easy-to-make concoction.

Because I continue to enjoy my personal elixir recipe and see its benefits in my own life, I want to share it with all of you so you too can have a hormone-happy drink to add to your routine!

Jana’s Daily Elixir Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of Milk of Your Choice (I prefer coconut or almond)
  • ¼ - ½ cup of Water
  • 1 tsp of Raw Cacao Powder
  • ½ tsp Cinnamon (I LOVE cinnamon and it has many benefits!)
  • 1 tsp Collagen
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 tsp Mushroom Mix of your Choice
  • 1 tsp Maca

 

Directions:

  • Blend all the ingredients together and heat on the stove (I try to avoid the microwave whenever I can). 
  • Serve warm and enjoy! 
  • *Bonus tip! Some days I sprinkle a bit of pink himalayan sea salt on top!
